Honda said that after postponing clean direct injection petrol vehicles, it now wants to lead the industry in marketing them.

The company has already developed clean technology for direct injection engines but the high development costs and difficulties in achieving high clean levels of NOx have hindered the start of volume production.

Development of lean Nox catalysts for the hybrid Insight has finally allowed volume production to proceed for non-hybrid models.

Relocating the fuel injector in the combustion chamber has made it possible to achieve over 90 percent lean-burn operation during normal driving.
