Delphi Automotive Systems Corp., trying to expand sales beyond the automotive industry, has decided to shorten its name to Delphi Corp. as it reaches for business in the aerospace, medical, computer and other high-tech industries.

Delphi, the world’s largest automotive parts supplier, currently derives more than 90 percent of its sales from the automotive and commercial vehicle industries. But Delphi hopes its emerging technology will win sales in new segments.

“As we went into these other markets outside the automotive arena last year, we actually entered the market as just Delphi. To them, we’ve dropped the Automotive Systems as we went into these markets,” said Bill Lafontaine, Delphi’s director of marketing and customer development. “It seemed like now was a good time to make the full transition.”

One of those new markets is the Segway Human Transporter, a self-balancing scooter in which the US postal service has expressed interest. Delphi will provide key electronics components for the Segway.
