The Financial Times reports that Ford has transferred virtually all its freight movements between Britain and continental Europe from rail to road following disruption and delays at the Channel tunnel.

Ford has been one of the biggest users of the Channel Tunnel rail link between England and France. The company’s move follows the widespread disruption to rail services over recent months due to security problems caused by asylum seekers trying to board trains to England.

The carmaker previously dispatched up to five trains a week from its Saarlouis car plant in Germany and Valencia, in Spain, to Britain. Each freight train carried about 200 cars, the newspaper reported.

“We are now finding other routes by road, mostly using ferry crossings from Zeebrugge, to our own freight terminal at Dagenham (in Essex),” a Ford spokesman told the FT.
