Audi in the UK has decided that the time is right to offer A8 customers more for their money on the ageing model. The company is struggling to hold A8 sales up against much younger competition.

All entry models will now have 18-inch alloy wheels and a six-CD changer as standard. Sport versions get Xenon Plus headlamps and 20-inch RS4-style rims – the largest fitted as standard to a production saloon – while the sporty S8 gets a boot-mounted CD changer.

The Audi A8 debuted in 1994 and is now long overdue for full replacement. Until last year, replacement was scheduled for spring 2002. However, Volkswagen bosses decided to put replacement back to 2003 so that the new A8 would not conflict with the launch this summer of Volkswagen’s new luxury car – the Phaeton.

The delay is said to have upset Audi dealers, many of whom are dismayed that Volkswagen is entering the high-end luxury segment anyway.
