New vehicle sales in Vietnam jumped by just over 41% to 16,413 units in December, from 11,631 units in the same month of last year, according to data released by the Vietnam Automotive Manufacturers Association.
Full-year sales increased by 38.2% to 133,588 units from 96,692 units in 2013, with demand fuelled by accelerating economic growth in the country. GDP is estimated to have expanded by close to 6% last year, compared with just over 5% in the previous year, driven by rising domestic consumption, exports and investment.

Sales of passenger cars, SUVs and MPVs combined increased by 32.4% to 77,009 units last year, from 58,150 units previously. Commercial vehicle sales were 46.8% higher at 56,579 units, from 38,542 units.
Toyota led the overall market with sales rising by close to 23% to 40,820 units. Its best-sellers were the Vios, Fortuner and Innova models, which together accounted for 63% of the brand’s sales.
Truong Hai (Thaco), which assembles Kias and various other commercial vehicles, reported a sales rise of over 35% to 32,801 units. Third-placed Ford reported a 71% jump in sales to 13,988 units, reflecting strong demand for the Transit minibus/van and the Ranger pickup truck which together accounted for 62% of sales.
VinaMazda’s sales jumped by 131% to 9,438 units last year, while Honda’s sales rose by 41% to 6,492 units.
