Indian new car market leader Maruti Udyog, which builds and sells Suzuki-designed vehicles, boosted sales 46% year on year in May to 39,178 units, the company said in a statement.
In April, the company’s sales grew 30% year on year, following on from record monthly sales of 42,123 vehicles in March. Maruti started production at a third car plant during May.
Sales of the [previous generation Suzuki Alto-based] Maruti 800 reached 16,907 units in May up 80% year on year. April sales of this model were 50% higher year on year in April.
Omni sales grew 13% year on year in May while the WagonR, a ‘mini minivan’, set a record at 5,179 units, up 132% year on year.
The new generation Alto, for which Maruti is the world production base, notched up home market sales of 3,317 in May, almost 57% up year on year.
