Subaru of America has set an eleventh consecutive annual sales record, crossing the 700,000 mark in the process. Sales in 2019 again outpaced Hyundai Motor America (688,771) and were almost double those of Volkswagen (363,322). The USA accounts for almost three quarters of Subaru’s global sales.
The brand delivered 700,117 vehicles in what is easily Subaru’s largest market, a gain of three per cent on the 680,135 sold in 2018. The addition of the Ascent helped to offset a decline in demand for the Legacy and Impreza sedans.

“We are pleased to close December and 2019 with strong sales and steady growth, despite an increasingly competitive auto industry,” said Jeff Walters, senior vice president of Sales. “In 2019, Outback was our top selling model, Forester had its best year ever, and the Ascent saw a triple-digit sales increase, reflecting the continued strength of our product portfolio. With the enduring support of our retailer network, we look forward to continued success in 2020.”

- Outback – 181,178 (+1.3%)
- Forester – 180,179 (+5.0%)
- Crosstrek – 131,152 (-9.2%)
- Ascent – 81,958 (+126.3%)
- Impreza – 66,415 (-13.1%)
- Legacy – 35,063 (-12.6%)
- WRZ & STI – 21,838 (-24.0%)
- BRZ – 2,334 (-39.1%)
This year should be a relatively quiet one for new model launches, although Subaru of America will have a full calendar year of the new generation Outback. It was launched in the USA in October. There should be a new Levorg for the Japanese market later in 2020, and globally, a second generation BRZ as well as a fresh WRX and STI. A facelifted XV (Crosstrek in the US and Canada) may also arrive towards year-end.
