Honda Motor said at the end of last week it would postpone the restart of vehicle assembly operations in Wuhan, the city at the centre of China's coronavirus outbreak, by at least a week at the request of the local authorities.

Honda now plans to resume operations in the city on 24 February at the earliest after the Hubei provincial government last week said it would extend suspension of business activity in the province until after 20 February.

This means that production at Honda's three plants in Wuhan, which have a combined annual capacity of 600,000 units, will have been suspended for four weeks unless further closure extensions are announced in the meantime.

The company's other plants in China, in Guangzhou in the southern Guangdong province, were scheduled to reopen today, 17 February.

Meanwhile Toyota Motor said on Saturday it planned to resume output at three of its four main vehicle plants in China this week, two weeks later than the original scheduled restart date at the end of the Lunar New Year holidays on 3 February.

Toyota said its vehicle assembly plants in Changchun, Jilin province, and in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, would reopen on 17 February while its Tianjin plant is scheduled to restart operations on the 18th.
