PSA Peugeot Citroen said on Tuesday (1 September) it would add a temporary weekend shift at its Mulhouse factory from January 2016 to handle an increase in orders due to higher demand in Europe and strong sales of the Peugeot 2008, Citroën C4 and DS4 built at the factory.

Extra working time agreed with unions has already seen 10,000 additional vehicles assembled since April.

Around 950 people will be hired for the first half of 2016 to staff the new weekend shift. Temporary employees will account for around 750 of these positions, with the remainder filled through internal transfers.

A EUR400 million transformation plan under way at Mulhouse will, PSA has said, make it "one of the top performing automobile plants in Europe by 2020".

PSA announced last July Mulhouse would produce a new DS model in 2018.
