Groupe PSA has for decades tended to put Peugeot first and there is ample evidence for that continuing. Citroën and more recently DS plus Opel-Vauxhall all need to be funded with fresh models and technology with none of them allowed to challenge prescient Peugeot.

As of now, the lion emblem marque has a head start on other Groupe PSA divisions. Will that continue should the merger with FCA go ahead though? Let’s take a look at Peugeot’s next generation models and launch timings.

The e-208 is an electric version of the 208. It was announced to the media just ahead of a world premiere alongside the 208 at the 2019 Geneva motor show and the first deliveries took place last October. The company says the e-208 weighs roughly 250 kg more than a 208 with a combustion engine.

This variant has a body-coloured grille as well as special badges on the car’s sides and tailgate. The single motor – supplied by Continental – is claimed to have outputs of 100 kW and 260 Nm, while there are three driving modes. As the battery pack is located under the back seat, where the fuel tank would otherwise be, interior space is claimed to be identical to that of petrol and diesel 208s.

A 50 kWh battery pack – part of a PSA-Nidec joint venture – offers range of up to 340 km according to the WLTP (Worldwide harmonised Light vehicles Test Procedures) certification protocol or 450 km according to NEDC (New European Driving Cycle). The battery ‘is guaranteed for eight years or 160,000 km for 70% of its charge capacity’.

Unlike other versions of the 208, the electric one is made solely in Slovakia. Its life cycle should be seven years, which means a facelift in 2023 and a successor in 2026.

The e-2008 is a fully electric version of the 4.3 m long 2008 crossover. The stated range is up to 310 km/193 miles (WLTP). The battery pack has an output of 50 kWh while power and torque are 100 kW and 260 Nm. Peugeot says top speed is 150 km/h and this is in Sport mode.

The electric 2008 was announced to the media in June 2019 five months ahead of its motor show premiere at AutoGuangzhou alongside the 2008. The Vigo plant in Spain is presently ramping up production. There would also be build in China, Groupe PSA told the media in July 2019. As with all versions of the 2008, there should be facelifts in 2023 and replacements in 2026.

Strong in so many segments, it’s a curious reality that Peugeot finds it hard to compete with the VW Golf in almost all countries with the exception of France. Much will therefore be expected of any new 308. Such a model is by no means guaranteed, particularly as in 2019, French market deliveries amounted to only 56,438 units. Renault has even hinted that it may not directly replace its 308 competitor, Mégane sales dropping to 44,215 last year.

What may happen is a switch in strategy: the 308 will be replaced but with the next Citroën C4 and its ë-C4 electric derivative being B segment models, it would make sense to give Peugeot a larger car. A 4.5 m long 308 (up from 4,253 mm for the current hatchback, and a name change to 408?) would also reduce the current stretch to the 4.9 m long 508.

Reflecting a need to be thrifty after it recently requested financial assistance from the French state, Groupe PSA has delayed the next model until 2021. In the meantime, a revised hatchback and SW range has just been announced. Although Peugeot didn’t mention this, another change is the deletion of the 205 PS petrol and 180 PS diesel GT variants. See PLDB for €6d-compliant engine capacities and outputs.

P64, the next generation 3008, could be one of the vehicles with which Peugeot will return to the USA. Groupe PSA stated that the brand would be launched there during the 2020s. eP64 is the code for the e-3008 electric version.

Back in May, the French state announced a raft of measures to help Groupe PSA and Groupe Renault. One of PSA’s resultant announcements was that “…a new generation of electrified platform will be industrialized at the Sochaux site by 2022 to manufacture the future generation of the Peugeot 3008”.

Sochaux will be the mother plant for vehicles which use EMP2 V4. This is an evolution of EMP2 which started life as an architecture for models such as the first generation Peugeot 308 and 3008. It has since been adapted for petrol-electric plug-in hybrids and in V4 form, for fully electric models such as the e-3008.

Changan Auto and Groupe PSA have co-developed pick-ups as the first models for their shared Light Commercial Vehicles architecture. The Landtrek will be for markets in South America and Africa. Groupe PSA hasn’t said anything about this but there could potentially be exports to North America: Mexico to start with but maybe the USA too. Further details of this one tonne pick-up are in PLDB, which is also where notes about the Changan equivalent can be found.

The e-Traveller, announced only a few days ago, is an electric version of the Traveller, the minivan/MPV/people carrier and van sold mainly in European countries since early 2016. The model has a range of up to 230 km (WLTP) with a 50 kWh battery, up to 330 km (WLTP) with a 75 kWh pack, as well as a choice of body lengths and up to nine seats.

As with combustion engine versions of this large MPV and van series, the e-Traveller uses an adaptation of PSA’s EMP2 architecture. This has the front part of that platform but the rest was developed especially for the Traveller plus its Citroën SpaceTourer and Toyota Proace brothers as well as their respective van variants. The platform’s modular design allows for two wheelbases (2.92 m and 3.27 m) as well as two rear overhangs (0.80 m and 1.15 m). The combination allows for 3 body lengths: XS at 4.60 m (a claimed first in the segment) with the shorter wheelbase. Then there is the M at 4.95 m and XL at 5.30 m with the longer wheelbase.

Reports for many other manufacturers’ future models are grouped in the OEM product strategy summaries section of just-auto.com.

Future platform intelligence

More detail on past, current and forthcoming models can be found in PLDB, the future vehicles database which is part of GlobalData’s Automotive Intelligence Center. That includes the many Peugeot models not discussed in this report.

This is the first of three features in a series which looks at the passenger car brands of Groupe PSA. Next, the focus will be on Citroën and DS, with the final instalment to investigate what’s coming for Opel and Vauxhall.
