The New Zealand new vehicle market continues to defy general economic indicators with sales in August up 10% year on year to 11,192 units "and delivering a steady 5% growth [to 87,105] for the year to date", according to John Manley, president of the local Motor Industry Association.
Toyota remained overall market leader for the month with a 21% share followed by Ford (11%) and Holden (9%). Year to date, Toyota, Holden and Ford, respectively, were the leaders.

New passenger car registrations of 7,752 vehicles last month were up 9.4% year on year for the strongest August since 1986. Toyota remained segment leader with 20% share followed by Mazda (10%) and Holden (9%). Year to date, Toyota, Holden and Mazda remained passenger vehicle market leaders.
Having been displaced in recent months, the Toyota Corolla was once again the top selling passenger model last month, followed by the RAV4 and Mazda 3.
New commercial vehicle registrations of 3,440 vehicles in August were up 10.8% year on year headed by Ford (24%) Toyota (23%) and Holden (9%).
The Ford Ranger remained the monthly top selling commercial, followed by the Hilux and Holden Colorado. Year to date the Ranger was the top selling commercial vehicle model (16%).
The Ranger was also the top selling single model overall in August.
Sports utility vehicles remained the dominant vehicle segment with 34% share in August and 33% year to date.
"Given the year to date sales position it is likely the industry will break the 130,000 unit barrier in 2015 for the first time ever," noted Manley.
