Vancouver Island’s Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) has been awarded a grant for C$162,000 (US$124,000) from the Provincial CleanBC Communities Fund to install ten new public EV charging stations.

The move is part of a larger investment in EV chargers across mid-Vancouver Island.

The new Level 2 charging stations will be installed across the RDN by the end of 2022 to help fill existing gaps in the mid-island area’s charging network and to expand zero emission transportation options for RDN residents, businesses and visitors.

All charging stations will be installed at accessible public facilities and will prioritise public access.

The funding is part of a larger grant application led by the RDN to support development of a mid-Island EV charging network, which ranges north to Campbell River and west to Tofino and Ucluelet.

The RDN led the grant on behalf of 12 mid-Island local governments, which will now also receive funding for installation of public charging stations in their areas.

“We are pleased to be awarded this grant to install EV charging stations in the RDN and other mid-island municipalities,” said RDN chairman, Ian Thorpe. “This supports the RDN’s strategic plan goal to be leaders in climate change adaptation and mitigation by making it easier to choose zero-emission transportation.”
