Union officials at the company’s plant in Sao Caetano do Sul had said GM was planning to lay off 350 workers but, in the wake of work slowdowns and protests on Monday, GM decided to offer the voluntary programme instead, the report added.


Union officials told Bloomberg News that GM wants to lay off some 800 workers at Sao Caetano do Sul and Sao Jose dos Campos, its two big plants in Brazil. The decision comes as GM struggles to keep Brazilian output in line with fast-falling sales, the news agency added.
