Jaguar Land Rover retail sales dropped 6.4% year on year to 52,160 units in December, parent Tata Motors said.

Total sales actually rose in the UK (7.8% to 6,706), North America (21.4% to 15,153) and Europe (7.6% to 12,389) but plunged 42.4% in China to 8,981 units, reflecting the 19% overall drop in that market in December.

Jaguar volume was up 18% to 16,165 units worldwide last month while Land Rover/Range Rover sales fell 11.4% to 35,995.

All brands suffered in China in December with Jaguar off 33% to 2,826 units and Land Rover down 46% to 6,155.

Tata, as is common in India, measures sales on a fiscal year (to 31 March) basis. It said year to date (nine months) JLR volume was down 4.9% to 419,999 units. Land Rover was down 8.8% to 289,097 but Jaguar was up 5% to 130,902 cars.

Jaguar sales, notably, fell sharply in North America to 25,497, a 19.1% drop in contrast to Land Rover's 22.7% rise to 75,441.
