FAW Volkswagen, the Chinese joint venture between Volkswagen and First Automotive Works, has set a short-term target of controlling more than 20% of locally-made passenger car sales.

Vice-president Peter Wolters reckons the target is achievable after the company managed 19% of sales for the first five months of the year.


FAW VW sold 71,903 cars Jauary to the end of May, 46% up on the year-ago period, Wolters said.


Sales included 46,946 Jettas, 13,433 Boras and 11,528 Audi A6s while revenue increased 33% year-on-year and pre-tax profits rose 11%.


FAW Volkswagen has just launched 1.6-litre petrol and diesel Boras, seven months after introducing a 1.8-litre version.


The diesel is the first such car made in China and the company plans to produce 50,000 Boras this year and 171,000 vehicles in total, up from 124,000 units last year.
