GM’s 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Denali and Cadillac Escalade brands currently being launched in the US include the Delphi-developed, silicone-based weight sensing technology mounted under the passenger seat cushion.

The seat-based sensor provides information to the airbag computer and, using sophisticated algorithms, the system can appropriately decide whether to suppress or deploy the airbag.

The integrated system works to help provide enhanced safety through reduced risk of airbag-induced injury. The weight sensor technology is nearly universally adaptable to all seat types without affecting seat crashworthiness or comfort and is a passive system requiring no interaction or involvement by the driver or passenger.

The seat belt tension sensor uses a compensation feature in the algorithm to better determine whether a child seat with a tightly belted (or cinched) seat belt or a person is occupying the seat.
