She already held the seat for strategic and political planning on the management board of powerful auto and engineering union IG Metall, having taken up that role last January.

The two trade union representatives have worked together on VW employee representative committees in recent months.

Schoenhardt also became Volkswagen and Audi representative at IG Metall from the beginning of this year.

"Dietze's term on the supervisory board coincided with eventful times, that were extremely challenging. The employee representatives thank her for her valuable contribution, which Schoenhardt will undoubtedly build on going forward. With her specialism in pay scales, training and qualification, she is assuming this office at exactly the right moment," said Joerg Hofmann, chairman of IG Metall and deputy chairman of the VW supervisory board.

This a return to the automaker for Schoenhardt who had worked there previously for several years.

She concluded an apprenticeship at VW Commercial Vehicles in the mid-1990s and then worked on the assembly line.
