New vehicle sales in Taiwan rose by 6.7% to 32,854 units in September from 30,799 units in the same month of last year, according to local reports citing registration data compiled by Taiwan's Directorate of Highways.

The market last month rebounded by over 37% from the sharp decline in August which accounted for most of this year's 'ghost month', the seventh month after the Lunar New Year. Many Taiwanese think that making major purchases during this four week period brings bad luck for the rest of the year.

Vehicle sales in the first nine months of the year were still 3.1% lower at 312,167 units from 322,084 units in the same period of last year with sales of domestically produced vehicles falling by 6.8% to 166,451 units while import sales were 1.6% higher at 145,716 units, accounting for almost 47% of total sales.

Toyota volume increased by 10.3% to 84,589 units in the first nine months of the year, helped by the recent launch of the new Corolla Altis, the country's best selling model, and also the new RAV4. Second placed Yulon Nissan saw its sales increase by 4.8% to 25,241 units in this period; Honda Taiwan shifted 23,230 units (-19.7%); Mercedes-Benz 20,931 (-4.5%); CMC 17,720 (+5.5%); and Mitsubishi Motors 17,584 (-14.9%).
