Workers at Volkswagen AG covered by collective bargaining agreements are receiving a performance related bonus for 2017 of EUR4,100, "including a special reward", the automaker said.

This bonus was based on the two year calculation period laid down in collective bargaining agreements.

The management board had also decided, following discussions with works council chairmen from the Brunswick, Emden, Hanover, Kassel, Salzgitter and Wolfsburg plants, "to add a special reward to the bonus in recognition of the special dedication of the workforce and the outstanding business success of the company".

Human resources chief Karlheinz Blessing said in a statement: "In 2017, the employees of Volkswagen achieved a very good team performance. The [management board]and the works council agree that this performance deserves our appreciation."

General works council chairman Bernd Osterloh said: "In 2017, the colleagues at our plants faced very considerable pressure. They showed that they also stand firmly behind the company in troubled times and bring Volkswagen forward."

An advance payment of EUR1,621 was made at the end of November 2017.
