Months of year on year sales rises in New Zealand appear to have ended after the Motor Industry Association reported June sales down 8.2% to 15,172 vehicles though the result was nonetheless the second strongest for the month.

Year to date, the market is up just 0.5% to 80,036 units.

Registrations of passenger and SUV vehicles fell 4.5% to 9,725 last month and commercial vehicle sales also fell, by 6.2% to 5,447.

Toyota remained overall market leader with a 16% market share (2,458 units), followed by Ford (11%; 1,629) and General Motors' Holden (8%; 1,276).

Toyota also continued to lead for passenger and SUV registrations with 22% (1,558) followed by Mazda (9%; 862) and Hyundai (8%; 823).

In commercials, Ford retained its lead (22%; 1,186 units) followed by Toyota (17%; 900) and Holden (11%; 581).

Four of the top five selling models in June were all light commercial vehicles, split only by the second placed Toyota RAV4 SUV. The Ford Ranger pickup truck remained the best selling vehicle model at 1,049 units. The RAV4 sold 678 and its Hilux sibling 646.

SUV Medium was the top segment in June with an 18% market share followed by Pick Up/Chassis Cab 4×4 (17%) and SUV Compact (13%).

"The MIA has received many enquiries on whether higher fuel prices have resulted in people purchasing smaller vehicles or more electric vehicles. Based on the results to end of June, there appears to be a slight shift to smaller vehicles with the SUV medium and SUV compact segments coming in first and third," said CEO David Crawford.
