Ever parked a truck? Me neither. But I have enormous respect for those who daily thread huge delivery trailers, hauled by prime movers bearing such names as Scania, DAF and Mercedes-Benz, through the chaos that is most European city roads and jammed motorways. And then line the business end up against a loading dock with the same sort of precision I can just about manage parking a small Kia at the supermarket. As with cars, numerous electronic aids now make truck driving a little easier (but no less skilled) and I was intrigued to see that 3D surround multi view camera systems for trucks are now on offer. Nissan Birdview scaled up, if you will.
Ichihiko Industries, an affiliate of Valeo group, this week announced its “3D Surround Multi View Camera TSM-100”, which is an omni-directional stereoscopic monitoring system for trucks, would soon be on sale in the aftermarket. It combines images from four HD cameras in real time and displays high quality 3D images to display omnidirectional views. It combines a bird’s eye view of the vehicle from directly above and adds to the situational awareness with the 3D view. The camera automatically switches lenses according to need, such as at an intersection, and also provides the appropriate images if turn signals or reverse gear are used. Clever.
This week we again tried to answer the ‘when will autonomous vehicles be with us’ question, learned of a Google discovery concerning human behaviour in autonomous vehicles, continued and completed our three part examination of Toyota product plans and discovered what Ford of Europe does with a device nicknamed Robutt.
Results continued to poor in ranging from a rise in sales and profits at Volvo Cars, a record loss and some setbacks at the ever-bullish Tesla (some analysts are saying Mr Musk might dial back the ‘overpromising’ a bit) and Takata-related legal costs in the US took a bite out of Honda’s first half operating profit.
Faurecia agreed a seat making joint venture with Chinese EV specialist BYD and Toyota celebrated 60 years in the US. They’ve come a long way since that first Toyopet Crown.
