Opel has announced a major investment for its Tychy engine plant, with a new 1.6-litre diesel engine to be manufactured there from 2017.

The GM division says it will spend EUR250m at the Polish site, lifting capacity to 200,000 engines a year. This is the largest investment to have been made at Tychy, and includes additional buildings and what Opel’s statement terms ‘new manufacturing technology’.

The surface area of buildings will increase by 30 percent with the addition of a new storage area, as well as production and testing lines. This expansion will transform what is currently an assembly facility into a full production plant. Construction and installation of the new production equipment will continue until 2016.

GM’s Gliwice and Tychy plants employ 3,500 people in Poland. The current portfolio includes the Opel/Vauxhall Astra and Cascada, as well as a 1.7-litre diesel engine.
