Decline followed a sharp fall in output for the home market, down 17.4% to 71,016, the SMMT said. Export volumes creaked up 1.1% to 135,275.

The trade group attributed the dip in UK engine demand to newly introduced locally-built models – like Nissan’s new Qashqai – still gearing up to full output levels
