The long-rumoured BMW X7, a full-size SUV, has been announced by BMW. As expected, it will be built in the US at an expanded Spartanburg plant.

“To meet strong global demand for our BMW X models, we will invest a total of one billion US dollars in our Spartanburg plant by 2016. This will increase annual production capacity by 50% up to 450,000 vehicles from 300,000 currently,” explained Norbert Reithofer. BMW AG’s chairman was speaking at a special ceremony in Spartanburg which commemorated 20 years of US production.

This, the F17 project, will be BMW’s largest SUV yet. No images, further details or launch date have been released but the X7 is expected to be a restyled, long-wheelbase variant of the third generation X5. That will make it a rival for the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, Range Rover and future Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
