On the day that BMW announced it will make the BMW X7 SUV at its US plant in South Carolina, it also said that it will invest a billion dollars in the facility to raise production capacity to 450,000 vehicles a year.

“This means 50 percent more than today and these 150,000 additional cars are equal to a whole new plant,” said Dr. Norbert Reithofer, BMW’s CEO and Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.

“More importantly, Spartanburg will become the largest plant in our global production network, a new milestone in the history of the BMW Group.”

The expansion will also create 800 new jobs at Spartanburg. By the end of 2016, BMW will have 8,800 workers at the plant.

“This will also open up new job opportunities for suppliers and continue to benefit the whole community around Spartanburg,” Reithofer said.
