Volkswagen Group sales were up 5.8% at 2.4m units in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year. Growth in March was 7.6% year-on-year at 929,500 units.

Sales chief Christian Klingler noted that while China remained the group’s largest single market, “there are signs of a return to modest growth on the markets in Western Europe.”

Sales in North America were down 4.1% at 197,300 and in South America they fell 23.1% to 168,600. These regions were offset by growth of 13.7% to 978,700 units in Asia-Pacific and 14.5% to 769,200 in China. Sales in Europe were up 8.7% at 958,600.

Each group brand saw quarterly sales rise with VW up 3.9% at 1.48m; Audi up 11.7% at 412,800; Skoda up 12.1% at 247,200 while SEAT sales grew 7.3% to 93,400 and Porsche sales were up 4.5% to 38,700.
