Korean car maker Kia has secured the contract for taxis in Ulaan Bator, Mongolia, in a ground-breaking export deal with the government which will see the first 225 Rio models arrive in the country later this year.

Kia said the Rio could eventually replacing the country’s entire fleet of 3,000 taxis, which are all used cars imported from various countries, by as early as the end of 2004.


The taxi upgrade is part of a national programme to improve the country’s image for the international “Visit Mongolia” promotion.


The Rio was chosen for its spacious interior, durability and keen pricing.
