Renault has fought back against suggestions by one of its major unions it is mulling closing two plants in France if productivity improvements are not agreed.

The moderate CFE-CGC labour body told just-auto Renault’s Flins and Maubeuge sites could be under threat, following a long series of talks with the automaker that have still not concluded.

“It is wrong – we never said we are going to close two sites,” a Renault spokeswoman told just-auto from Paris. “We just said we have to find an agreement to find [a] solution for competivity.

“We are in a dialogue and on 29 January [next Paris meeting], it is up to the unions to present their counter -propositions. We know Europe will not go back to what it was before. So we have to take strategic measures.”

Last week, Renault announced plans to cut 7,500 jobs by 2016, although its hardline CGT union claims there could be more than 8,200 redundancies
