GM-Avtovaz, the joint venture established by GM and Russia’s largest carmaker Avtovaz in 2001 in Togliatti, will idle for three days over the next month as demand for the Chevrolet Niva slows.

As recently as last November the company said it was facing two to three months of back orders for the popular SUV. Now the plant will idle on March 29, April 5 and 12 as it adjusts production to demand, the company said in a statement.

Togliatti manufactured 62,981 Chevrolet Nivas last year, up 9% year-on-year, and the company says it plans to produce 62,500 vehicles in 2013.

Last September the JV directors approved a US$200m expansion of the plant the would increase annual capacity at the plant from 98,000 to 120,000 units.
