New vehicle sales in Vietnam increased by almost 53% to 12,940 units in September, from 8,466 units a year earlier, according to data released by the Vietnam Automotive Manufacturers Association.
Cumulative sales for the first nine months of the year increased by close to 34% to 90,108 units, from 67,046 units in the same period of last year. Economic growth continued to accelerate in the third quarter, driven by rising industrial output and higher domestic consumption.

Sales of passenger cars, SUVs and MPVs combined increased by 32% to 53,653 units over the nine-month period, from 40,632 units previously. Commercial vehicle sales rose by 38% to 36,455 units, from 26,414 units.
Toyota led the overall market in the first nine months of the year with sales rising by close to 19% to 27,774 units. Truong Hai (Thaco), which assembles Kias and various other commercial vehicles, reported a sales rise of just under 30% to 22,500 units.
Third-placed Ford reported a 69% jump in sales to 9,248 units, reflecting strong demand for the Transit minibus/van and the Ranger pickup truck which together accounted for 61% of sales. Mazda’s sales jumped by 160% to 6,201 units, with the BT-50 and the 3 its best-selling models. Honda’s sales rose by 63% to 4,773 units.
