New Zealand’s new vehicle importers’ association has dubbed last month “another exceptional month” after the strongest July registrations for passenger vehicles (6,769) since 1987 and the best July commercial tally (2,632) since 1984.

The Motor Industry Association said year to date commercial vehicle registrations were 25.5% ahead of this point in 2012 (17,386 versus 13,857), and passenger vehicle sales were up 5% (46,550 versus 44,353).

Toyota remained market leader last month with 18.1% market share, or 1,703 registrations (1,159 passenger cars and 544 commercials). GM’s Holden was second with 11.6% (1,088), closely followed by Ford (11.2%, 1,051).

Year to date, Toyota was also market leader with 19.6% (12,495) with Ford second (10.8%, 6,921) and Holden third (10.1%, 6,440).

The Toyota Corolla (376) was top selling car, tailed by the Holden Captiva (244) and Suzuki Swift (239).

Ford’s Ranger was top selling commercial (380) followed by the Toyota Hilux (374) and Nissan Navara (304).  

The SUV segment was the most popular with 27% of total registrations reflecting the dominant position year to date (28%). Pickup/chassis accounted for 20% last month and 19% year to date.

Total new vehicle registrations were up 10% year on year to the end of July at 63,864.

“With a strong New Zealand dollar and low inflation the real price of purchasing a new vehicle is better now that it has ever been,” MIA CEO David Crawford said.
