Strong growth in the US is fuelling plans by Fuji Heavy Industries to increase global sales of its Subaru brand to 1m by 2017. Last year it sold 720,000 and in FY2013 it expects to sell a record 800,000 units, president Yasuyuki Yoshinaga told the Nikkei in Tokyo.
Sales in the US where the Forester SUV is doing particularly well, are expected to grow by 25% this calendar year to 420,000 climbing to 500,000 as Fuji Heavy invests in new staff and improving service its US dealer network.

US manufacturing capacity at its Indiana plant will almost double to 400,000 units a year by 2016, partly with the ending of the 100,000-a-year contract assembly for Toyota and partly by adding a further 100,000 units of capacity, said Yoshinaga who added that the company was also looking to expand its presence in China and South East Asia.
