Tata Motors said it has committed to long term R&D in the UK with a multi-million pound investment through subsidiary, Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TMETC), at the University of Warwick campus.

TMETC will consolidate its R&D around the collaborative National Automotive Innovation Campus (NAIC) and expand its capabilities for automotive research and product innovation.

Tata’s luxury car unit Jaguar Land Rover has just opened a technical academy in Beijing.

The NAIC facility will open in 2016 and house around 1,000 engineers and scientists.

TMETC will be joined in the NAIC project by partners, Jaguar Land Rover and the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) at the university of Warwick.

The NAIC itself will be built on the university campus.

The NAIC, a total investment of around GBP100m, will receive funding from Tata Motors of around GBP30m with additional support from Jaguar Land Rover, WMG and the UK government’s Higher Education Funding Council England (HEFCE) fund.

NAIC will create and develop technologies to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and reduce CO2 emissions.

TMETC expects further collaborations with other academic institutions and industrial partners in the UK and internationally.

“This will significantly enhance TMETC’s contribution to Tata Motors’ future product innovation and development by creating an environment appropriate for the increased quality of output required as well as its contribution to future collaborative R&D in the UK,” it said.

Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2014.

Tim Leverton, who heads advanced engineering and product development for Tata Motors, said: “This investment constitutes the next step in [our] strategy to develop world class products for its global customers and TMETC plays a significant role in that plan.

“We see the UK as a global hub for innovative and low carbon automotive technologies which will benefit our customers.”
