“There has been no decision taken,” a DaimlerChrysler spokesman told the news agency.
According to Reuters, the Financial Times reported that DaimlerChrysler finance chief Manfred Gentz had said that Chrysler was looking to cut up to 4,500 qualified workers, adding that this was the first confirmation by the group of job losses.
Under a recent agreement with the United Auto Workers union, five Chrysler parts plants will either be sold, closed or put into a joint venture, allowing the company to shed roughly 6,000 jobs, company and union sources told Reuters.
“The new deal with the UAW gives us the flexibility to consider jobs. But we have not taken any decision as to whether this will be necessary at all,” the spokesman told the news agency.
Reuters said Gentz was quoted as saying Chrysler had “not yet given up” on posting a positive operating profit this year and the spokesman confirmed his comment.
