Indonesia’s largest vehicle manufacturer, PT Astra Daihatsu Motor, is recalling more than 50,000 Gran Max light commercial vehicles and the Sirion small passenger car due to factory defects.

The company said separate design faults were found in both models, though the Grand Max recall is by far the larger of the two with a total of 48,703 units built between 2007 and 2010 being recalled.

The locally-made light van and pickup range was found to have a defective bracket holding the spare tyre in place.

The Sirion, which is sourced from Malaysia’s Perodua, has a leaky air conditioning hose – though only 3,227 units sold between 2008 and 2011 are being recalled.

The recall is expected to cost the company IDR15bn (US$1.63m) and will last for a whole year.
