New vehicle sales in Malaysia rose by 26.6% to 58,299 units in May, from 46,045 units a year earlier, after months of decline following the introduction of tighter lending criteria in January.

Year-earlier sales were affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan last year, which disrupted the supply of components to some carmakers.

The Malaysian Automotive Association, which released the data, said it expected volumes to continue at this level in June.

Sales in the January-May period were down by 4.2% at 244,620 units from 255,413 a year earlier.
