Severe flooding in the upper Yangtze river has cut off cargo shipments by boat to the inland cities of Chengdu and Chongqing, affecting the supply chains of a number of carmakers.

Inland shipping operations past the Three Gorges Dam have been completely halted since Tuesday as the upstream region of the massive river system was inundated by the worst flooding since the 2006 completion of what is one of the world’s largest dams.

The river Yangtze serves as a major transportation thoroughfare linking China’s interior with coastal regions. Carmakers, including Toyota, Volkswagen, Geely, Changan, Ford and Suzuki, normally have key components shipped in by boats.

The companies said they were switching to road transport to maintain the supply chain.
