Maruti says it will initially start with modest production of just 150 units per day at its Manesar plant, with the automaker also claiming its vaunted home protection could apply to all levels of staff.

Maruti revealed today (16 August) it would resume production at its ravaged factory on 21 August and would provide a battery of personal security at staff homes on top of a 500-strong factory police force and 100 guards, some of them ex-forces.

“One level is the government giving security and we will have our own security guards,” a Maruti spokesman told just-auto from Delhi. “It [security] would be assessed on the basis of need.

“This would be for [the] safety of the people employed – it could be across levels. In today’s situation, we felt the need for security, but surely it can’t go on for a long time.”

Maruti added around 500 workers had been disciplined and would not be taken back as it started to increase production from its initial low base.

“We have no figure of production to begin with, but what was said by the chairman [R C Bhargava] was we would start possibly with around 150 units in the first few days,” said the spokesman.

“We normally [produce] between 1,500 [and] 1,700 units.”

Maruti says it will also not employ temporary workers provided by contractors on the direct production line, but has started to hire them personally.

“The schedule of recruitment has been communicated to all the existing contract workers through the contract agencies and recruitment would start from 2 September,” said a Maruti statement.
