Renault continues to expand its Indian market range, with the latest product a small sedan that is based on the Nissan Sunny.
Confusingly, there are now two Renault Scalas. The first one, launched in 2010, is built in South Korea by Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) and is a rebadged Samsung SM3 Classic Edition. It is exported to Columbia, Mexico and Egypt.

The second Scala recently entered production at the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s Oragadam plant in India’s Tamil Nadu state. It is a version of the Nissan Sunny that goes down the same line at the Chennai facility.
The Korean- and Indian-built Scalas do not share styling, though they are similarly sized. The older, Korean-made car sits on Nissan’s MS architecture, while India’s new model uses the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s V platform.
The Indian market Sunny & Scala are also closely related to Nissan North America’s Versa sedan as well as to the Nissan Almera sold in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and certain other markets. Nissan is also due to reveal a Russian-made model called Almera at next week’s Moscow motor show but it is not yet known what, if anything it shares with Asia-Pacific’s Almera.
