The Canadian Auto Workers has authorised strike action by hourly workers at General Motors, Ford and Chrysler plants.

The union is presently negotiating a new contract with the Detroit Three ahead of a 17 September contract expiration deadline.

“Our members support their bargaining committees and trust them to negotiate a fair settlement that shares in the success of the companies,” CAW president Ken Lewenza said in a statement.

The CAW says it will hold more talks with the three manufacturers in Toronto later on 27 August and also on 28 August. The union told the media that 99 percent of Chrysler Canada’s CAW members as well as 98 percent of GM Canada’s and 97 percent of Ford Canada’s workers voted for the action.

The following plants, each of which is in Ontario, build vehicles for the Detroit Three:

  • Brampton (Chrysler 300/Lancia Thema, Dodge Challenger & Dodge Charger)
  • CAMI, Ingersoll (Chevrolet Equinox & GMC Terrain)
  • Oakville (Ford Edge, Ford Flex, Lincoln MKT & Lincoln MKX)
  • Oshawa #1 (Buick Regal, Cadillac XTS & Chevrolet Camaro)
  • Oshawa #2/’Consolidated Line’ (Chevrolet Equinox & Chevrolet Impala)
  • Windsor (Chrysler T&C/Grand Voyager/Lancia Voyager, Ram Cargo Van & VW Routan)
