GM is planning on investing US$1bn in its Russian operations over the next five years.

The plan is part of the company’s agreement with the Russian Federal Ministry of Economic Development that is setting a framework for increased volume targets and localisation commitments for foreign carmakers.

The investment will also support the increase of production at the GM-AVTOVAZ joint venture in Togliatti, Russia, resulting in combined annual Russian production capacity for GM of 350,000 vehicles.

GM is planning to more than double annual production at its St Pete plant (which builds the Chevrolet Cruze and Opel Astra) to 230,000 vehicles per year.

Production of the Chevy Niva under the GM-AVTOVAZ JV is planned to rise to 120,000 from 70,000, bringing total production of GM brands in Russia to an annual 350,000 vehicles.
