Ssangyong aims to take advantage of China’s desire for diesel-powered SUVs. According to reports, there is enough room for Ssangyong to sell 200,000 to 300,000 SUVs priced between CNY200,000 and CNY300,000 yuan (US$31,398-$47,097). Official pricing will be announced in September.

However, Ssangyong still lacks the full dealer network it needs to maximise sales. The manufacturer is currently in the process of preparing the 30-plus dealers it has in the north of the country for the new models. By the end of the year Ssangyong plans to have 50 dealers in China, with that number increasing to 80 and 100 in 2012 and 2013, respectively.

“Everything is going according to plan,” Zhang said when asked about the manufacturer’s strategy for Beijing.
