New vehicle sales in Thailand jumped by close to 64% to 129,509 units in August, from 79,043 units a year earlier, according to data released by Toyota Motor (Thailand) Ltd.
The market continues to be driven higher by particularly strong activity in the passenger car segment, helped by first-time buyer incentives and the expanding range of small cars such as the Mitsubishi Mirage.

Passenger car sales were up by close to 72% at 61,044 units, from 35,545 units a year earlier. The traditionally dominant pickup truck segment has been forced to take the back seat, with sales rising by 62% to 60,369 units – from 37,309 units.
Cumulative sales for the first eight months of the year increased by over 48% to 866,037 units, from 583,957 units a year earlier. With the domestic automotive industry still recovering from last year’s floods, the market is set to break the one-million unit mark for the first time this year – with volumes likely to exceed 1.2m units.
