German
auto maker Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) is planning to make more than 1 million
vehicles per annum by 2005 at the latest, according to Michael Ganal – board member
responsible for sales and marketing – in a report in the Handelsblatt newspaper.

Ganal said that the new models to be built by BMW – which produced 820,000
vehicles last year – including the Mini and an as yet unnamed small BMW will
generate additional volume.

Ganal said that because BMW – which aims to makes its presence felt within
the US in the coming years by selling smaller models there – is a premium brand,
the company will not be affected in its biggest export market by the ‘volume
crisis’ affecting other manufacturers including General Motors, Ford and Chrysler.
