Domestic car sales in Thailand for the first nine months of the year have topped 1m for the first time ever, spurred by strong demand, overall production increases to speed up deliveries and a first-car buyer scheme introduced in the country.

In September alone, sales soared 52.7% from the same month in 2011 to 132,874 units.

Toyota Motor Thailand’s vice president Vutigorn Suriyachantananont said he expects the momentum to continue through this month due to the cumulated backlog of orders and the continued growth in vehicle demand.

Toyota had the largest share of the overall automobile market in the first three quarters with cumulative sales growing 75.9% to 380,751 units, a 38.1% market share.

It was followed by Isuzu with 150,000 sales and Honda which sold 106,444 units in the January to September period.

The market total for the whole of 2011 was 794,081 units.
