Staffordshire County Council in the UK’s Midlands region is to invest GBP18.5m (US$29m) in building a new motorway junction to cater for increased traffic as Jaguar Land Rover builds its engine manufacturing plant.

Planning permission for the GBP350m JLR site was granted this week by South Staffordshire Council’s planning committee, in a move thought to create at least 750 jobs and many more in the supply chain.

“We will start work imminently [on the junction] as permission was granted this week,” a Staffordshire County Council spokesman told just-auto. “That money is council investment [along with] South Staffordshire and Wolverhampton Council.”

Staffordshire cabinet member economic growth and enterprise Ben Adams said: “It’s great news for Staffordshire, the Midlands and the UK that the development of the new JLR plant can now begin.

“After the initial excitement of the announcement by the company in September we have been looking forward to the next phase of this project.”

“We are looking forward to seeing construction work begin on site in the new year and the plans being put together for the new motorway junction.”

Staffordshire County Council worked with South Staffordshire Council and Wolverhampton City Council in a joint bid to attract JLR.
