General Motors has confirmed it will restyle its Pontiac Aztek sports utility vehicle, which has been on the market for less than a year, according to a report in the Mexican financial daily El Economista.

The Aztek is manufactured only in a GM plant in Ramos Arizpe, in the central Mexican state of Hidalgo.

GM vice president for North America Ron Zarella said the Aztek will be redesigned to reduce the price of the vehicle, which is aimed at the ’20-and-up’ buyer segment, El Economista auto industry columnist Guillermo Lira reported.

Sales of the Aztek have not lived up to GM’s expectations and the vehicle’s unusual styling has been panned by critics.

GM is said to have boosted registrations by insisting around 3,500 staff drive an Aztek as a company vehicle.
