Official figures from the Automotive Industry Association (OSD) have yet to be released but general secretary Ercan Tezer said the country’s passenger and light commercial vehicle sales fell 17% last year.

Tezer told Reuters: “Production and exports can be expected to decline by 15-20% (in 2009). The total market can also be expected to fall 15%.”

In mid-2008 it was thought Turkish car production would reach 1.4m units after strong sales in the first five months.

But Tezer said: “Production will end the year below 1.2m units with the sharp slowdown of the last three months, while exports can be expected to fall to 880,000 units from 1m units.”
