Volkswagen sales in China hit a record 1.4m vehicles in 2009 – up almost 37% over the previous year – in what has now become its most important market.

A company statement described 2009 as “an extraordinary year” when the market in China went “beyond everybody’s expectations”.
The group sold 1.12m VW brand cars in China, nearly 159,000 Audi models and 122,500 Skodas. It also sold 600 ‘supercars’ in China, including 484 Bentleys and 118 Lamborghinis.
Winfried Vahland, president and chief executive of Volkswagen Group China, said: “We are full of confidence for 2010 (and) expecting a growth rate of 10 to 15% for the total automotive market in China.”
