Nissan Motor is considering allowing permanent staff at factories where operations have been temporarily suspended to take side jobs to supplement their income, a senior company official said on Wednesday.

”We will decide on the matter after weighing various considerations including our employees’ healthcare,” senior vice president Hitoshi Kawaguchi, who also heads the company’s human resources department, told Kyodo News.
Kawaguchi added that Nissan would not approve the measure unless it could implement it responsibly.
Nissan is suspending operations at domestic plants and some facilities for a maximum of 13 days this month. During the suspension, workers will be subject to pay cuts of up to 20%.
Electronics manufacturers including Toshiba and a semiconductor arm of Fujitsu have already given their workers permission to look for second jobs, the report noted.
